Aetherite is material originally created by the Sovereign. Pure aetherite is highly reactive, and will combust if left exposed to the air for even a short amount of time. As a result, aetherite is almost never seen in pure form and small amounts of it are always mixed with other materials. Aetherite is designed to dissapate energy in the physical realm, and even a small amount of aetherite can raise the melting point of a material by several degrees.

Aetherite was designed as an insulator to isolate aethersteel devices from other sensitive components. Aetherite actually steals energy from aethers and transfers it to the physical realm; usually in the form of heat. As a result, aethers are repelled by the material as they seek to find new charge. When used in the proper hands aetherite can be used to create an area completely isolated from the nexus.

Aetherite is a rather dangerous material, and usually used in microscopic quantities. Extended exposure to the substance can be fatal to humans, as it removes important aethers from around their body. Most notably is the removal of void aethers from the brain area, usually resulting in permanent insanity. While aetherite creates heat, it is not known to be a significant power source due to its instability.

Aetherite must be used very carefully in conjunction with aethersteel. When the materials touch, sometimes they negate each others properties, sometimes they react violently. The Masters found that surrounding an aethersteel generator in aetherite could create a powerful feedback loop that could draw aethers in but not release them. This yielded them an incredible amount of energy that they planned to use to destroy the aeons. The technocrats attempted an experiment to make a similar devise, and instead found a way to make a very powerful explosion.

Aetherite decays very quickly when not properly shielded, and very little original aetherite remains from the ancient times. Consequently the Legion and the Magi have had almost no experience with aetherite. Fortunately the Technocrats have found ways to manufacture their own in limited quantities. The Wisps use aetherite as an important ingredient in making their protective shell.
