Aethers are the substance that creates the laws of physics. They are non-living entitys that exist in The Nexus just beyond human sight. They follow their own set of rules, and force all matter to be governed by their actions. However, someone who knows enough about how Aethers work, can use them to their advantage.

Properties of Aethers

Aethers exist in a parallel plane to all existence. They float freely in The Nexus waiting to be needed. When triggered by some event on the other side of the Nexus they release their energy and cause an effect to occur. Be it an object falling due to gravity, or a match lighting. Anytime a light turns on this is an example of aethers doing their job. You are not so much seeing light that is generated by a coil and power, but you are seeing the effects of the aethers on the environment. The end result being light.

Aethers have always been around us, though understood in different amounts at different times. It is speculated that aethers have always existed, even predating the Aeons themselves. If this is true or not is up for debate, but what is known is that nothing can function without aethers. Even the thoughts you have could not take place without aethers releasing their energy.

Types of Aethers

Aethers exist in 5 basic forms

- Fire (Controls the laws of Energy)

- Water (Controls States of Matter, material properties(liquids and gases),and phase of existance)

- Air (Controls the laws of Force, Acceleration, and momuntum also does weather.)

- Earth (Controls Gravity Magnetism, and material properties(solids))

- Void (Controls the Mind)

Science of Aethers

Aethers are particles that control the laws of the universe. Aethers are not matter, they do not take up space, and do not have any mass. Aethers exist in a realm called the Nexus; a realm that overlaps all of our own. While any other dimension can be considered parallel to ours, the Nexus, rather, is perpendicular to every other dimension. It intersects all dimensions, and permeates through them. The Nexus must always remain in equilibrium and is kept in this state by the aethers. Anytime the Nexus is not in equilibrium, an anomaly is produced.

Aethers posses properties similar to our atoms, but not exactly the same. Several different types of aethers exist, each managing a different set of physical laws. Aethers will not enforce the laws of a different type of aether. Since aethers are not matter, they posses the ability to pass through one another, however they do not due to aetheric fields.

Aetheric fields are created by the energy stored inside an aether. This energy is stored in quantum levels and is collected by the aethers from the other dimensions through which they permeate. A charged aether attracts uncharged aethers toward itself provided they are not the same type. Aethers of the same type are repelled from a charged aether. Charged aethers of the same type are repelled even more. An attracted aether will move toward a charged aether until its own energy begins to repel it. This attraction and repulsion causes aethers to distribute evenly throughout the nexus and allows it to remain in equilibrium. When an aether enforces a physical law, it dispels this energy and it is caught by the aethers surrounding it. Some of this energy is sent out of the nexus to return to the other dimensions which creates the visual effect which a person in such a dimension experiences. For example when an apple detaches from a tree, aethers that control gravity around it dispel energy. Most of this energy is collected by other aethers, however a portion of it is sent to the same dimension as the apple causing it to fall to the ground.

Void Aethers

Void aethers make up about 1-2% of all aethers, and posses a charge capacity far greater than any other type of aether. As a result a charged void aether will attract many other aethers of all types to itself, in anticipation for the vast amount of energy it may discharge. Aethersteel works by collecting void aethers and then suddenly giving them a great deal of charge. The result is a massive flow of aethers toward the device. If insufficient aethers are found to collect this massive amount of energy upon its total release, the resulting explosion is…devastating…

Keeping aethers charged for such an extended period of time is very dangerous, so Aethersteel devices must constantly purge themselves by forcing a few of the void aethers to discharge. On occasion, this gives birth to a type 2 anomaly

Anomaly's

A type 1 anomaly occurs when a charged aether dispels its energy, but the surrounding aethers are unable to collect the appropriate amount of released energy. This results in too much energy being released into the desired dimension. This can result in the existence of unexplained phenomenon such as Black holes and telekinesis. These anomalies occur in nature very rarely.

A type 2 anomaly occurs when too many charged aethers of the same type exist in too close proximity. In an effort to retain equilibrium, the aethers are thrown from each other at incredible speeds. However on occasion a charged aether is repelled by all directions at once and is consequently forced from the nexus into another dimension. The result is what we call an Elemental. These anomalies were originally not known to exist apart from the presence of Aethersteel, however since the suns recent decay Type 2 anomaly's of various sizes have been seen apart from Aethersteel.

Aethersteel

Aethersteel is a marvel of a material as it allows a link between the physical world and The Nexus. A metal material with the ability to attract and hold Aethers like a sponge, ready for later use. This material was once used to power The Old Ones power plants and other key technology items. It was also used in large amounts to produce the massive construct that now forms the spire in the center of Serenity. Aethersteel becomes more and more scarce over time, and is the most highly prized commodity in the universe. See also (Aethersteel(material))
